Nordlichter direkt vor unsere Skilodge am Lyngen Fjord

Best time to go, snow and northern lights

The best time of year in Norway for Northern Lights and powder snow ski touring is from mid-February to early April. Later is still perfect for skiing, but aurora borealis is getting very unlikely.

Around March 21st, the equinox, day and night are the same length everywhere on Earth. From March 21st, the days increase rapidly and from mid-May, the sun no longer sets north of the Arctic Circle.

The deep winter conditions quickly become spring-like, with one result: the powder snow in all exposures until mid-March turns into thick firn on south-facing slopes in April. On the north side it remains powdery at higher altitudes. Clothing and ski equipment should be adapted to this.

Northern Lights right in front of our ski lodge

The northern lights appear most frequently in the transitional periods of autumn — winter and winter — spring. In February and March, which is the best time of year for the northern lights and powder snow, we offer our ski touring trips in Norway.

The only thing we need during this time is clear skies and a volunteer who can watch the sky from our terrace in the early hours of the night and raise the alarm if necessary. In April, the “Aurora Borealis” phenomenon becomes rarer.
